Ida Johnsen was one the pioneers of nursing and worked under Professor Ludvig Brandes at the institutions of Almindelig Hospital and Lemmestiftelse (hospitals for the poor and elderly) in 1868. In her memoirs “Mellem to Tidsaldre” she describes her work and her many experiences among the patients and doctors, painting an elegant and multifaceted picture of people, society, and the many religious upheavals of the day.

She carried out charity work among the poorest patients and implemented municipal nursing after marrying a clergyman.
