Christence Juul

1585 - 1659

Denmark

Christence Juul was the daughter of Anne Stygge Thomesdatter and Niels Axelsen Juul of Kongstedlund, Aalborg district, married Hans Krabbe of Søgård in 1621, and as a young girl compiled a song-book of fifty-six songs. Characteristic of her song-book, which is one of thirty-five surviving Danish song manuscripts from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, are the maxims and stanzas inserted between the songs, some of which she wrote herself. The repertoire, put together by Christence Juul herself, is similar to that of other song collectors of the period; however, in twenty or so instances she has put in her own variation of the song in question.
