Margareta Stenman

1739 - 1811

Sweden

Margareta Stenman belonged to the Moravian Church, was a maid and housekeeper, and later married a metal worker. Her father was a shipwright in Stockholm, where she lived all her life. In accordance with tradition in the Moravaian Church community, she wrote an account of her life in approximately 1779.

Her interesting autobiography describes the inner conflicts she went through in vivid detail: she appears to have fallen in love with a priest with sympathies for the Moravian Church. Her account of these conflicts and the complicated circumstances are both stirring and very moving.
