Charlotte Cecilia af Tibell

1820 - 1901

Sweden

Charlotte Cecilia af Tibell was daughter of a general and she began after her conversion in 1851 to write poems and prose with a Christian message. She was born and grew up in Stockholm and received private tuition, as did her sister Marianna Wilhelmina, who also became a writer.

Her debut collection Blommor vid vägen till Zion, 1852, includes earlier, secular poems. Her novel Esther och Castenza of 1872 is a humorous portrayal of women’s slavery under men’s egotism. In the 1870s and 1880s, she contributed articles to Christian periodicals.
